Session Title: We are a Global, Diverse Jewish People
Intro to Jews of Color, A U.S.-er Paradigm
DESCRIPTION: Who are Jews of Colour and why are they so important and awesome? Seriously awesome. Come get a comprehensive primer on Jews of Colour (from a US vantage point) and gain greater insight into the opportunities, advocacy, programming, and vistas that Jews of Colour are creating for themselves and for the Jewish community at large.
Overview: April N. Baskin’s honors thesis, ”I'm Different Wherever I Go:" Experiences and Identities of Jewish Young Adults of Color in American Judaism (2006), considers the history of race and diversity in American Judaism and the multi-faceted dimensions of identity among young Jews of Color. At the time, there was limited information about the experiences of Jews of Color in America. This research sought to fill that gap and initiate dialogue about this segment of the Jewish community, as well as how the inclusion of Jews of Color can strengthen the American Jewish community as a whole.
